How to rent a car in Sri Lanka

Everything you need to know about hiring a car, van or bike in Sri Lanka — licences, insurance, pricing and booking on RentZone.

Renting a car in Sri Lanka gives you freedom to explore beaches, hill country and ancient cities at your own pace. On RentZone you can compare cars, vans and bikes from verified hosts with clear nightly or daily rates.

Most travelers collect a vehicle in Colombo, Negombo (near the airport), Kandy or Galle. Book ahead in peak season (December–April) when coastal and hill-country demand is highest.

Licence and documents

International visitors typically need a valid home-country driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) for car rentals. Always confirm requirements with the host before you travel.

Carry your passport and booking confirmation when you pick up the vehicle. Some hosts offer delivery to your stay or the airport for an extra fee.

Pricing and booking on RentZone

Listings show the base rate in LKR (or the listing currency), security deposit and minimum stay. Fixed-rate listings can be booked immediately; Bid and Fixed + Bid listings let you compete on price during an auction window.

Use filters on the Vehicles page to narrow by city, price and pricing mode. Read reviews and check photos before you confirm.

Driving tips

Traffic in Colombo and main highways can be busy — allow extra time and drive defensively. Hill-country roads are scenic but winding; fuel up before remote routes.

Parking at hotels and guesthouses is usually available; in Galle Fort and central Colombo, ask your host about the best nearby options.
